Art Guild Frames
I have had the distinct privilege to make frames for Kory Dollar of Marvelous Mosaic under the Dollar/Wise moniker. This gives me full artistic license to create and interpret each unique piece the way I see it. God bless Kory for having faith in me to go wild with my designs. This also keeps me insulated from the ‘business end’ in dealing with price and what to charge for these things. I have an all consuming and absolute aversion to dealing with money in regards to my work. Someone once said, “He knows the cost of everything but the value of nothing.”… and I don’t ever want to be that guy.
Below are only a few examples of items being made for Kory and Marvelous Mosaic that went to the show at the Convention Center in Portland over the Mothers Day Weekend. Many items sold and it was a pretty good show according to all concerned.
This is a fused glass piece that I knew just HAD TO HAVE this style, I knew it the instsnt I looked at it. Made of Phillipine mahogany, I spent a disgusting amount of time on this, but it was worth it in my estimation.
I think it looks like a monkey paw clutching onto it from behind.
The below frame took special attention as well. I happened to have these purple tubes lying around that matched the purple glass rods imbedded in the piece. Recycled teak caps the ends that were then rubbed with Old English furniture polish.
Below are what are called “valences”. They are the “tips and tails” of glass that is hand rolled at the factory. Some of them are rather spectacular. I machine cut, not saw, a deep groove into a piece of wood that closely matches the glass and imbed the glass into it using a very strong adhesive. I then bore holes in which stainless steel cables slip through and are looped at the ends in order for them to hang. I also built the stand on which they hang (made from recycled pine of discarded Ikea bed slats).
Vikki Alsup made the one with the mushrooms - and it sold!
THEN TRAGEDY STRUCK!!!
Just as I am ready to glue up this gorgeous fused glass piece, it slipped from my fingers and fell no more than three inches and shattered. I was sick the rest of the night. Not only was this a dreamy piece of art, but this frame was custom made just for it and no other. Needless to say, I’m heartbroken over this.
That’s all I have for this post, but please subscribe, share or comment. I do hope what I’m doing is making a difference.
