Picture This In Your Yard!
(❁´◡`❁) And now imagine that YOU Built It!
Neoteric Wood Art is inviting all subscribers, free or paid, to learn some simple rules on converting used and discarded items into beautiful, practical and operable art! The focus of Neoteric will be to help others learn the principles of turning ordinary used materials, from construction discards, furniture, hardware and even glassware, into cool stuff you can use to enhance your home, office, yard or garden. You can even make money selling your creations to people who care about conserving resources and contributing less to the ever-growing landfill mountains.
The two main tenets of Neoteric Wood Art:
First Rule: Discover new and innovative ways to convert salvaged materials into art.
Second Rule: Repurposed materials should also be functional.
In my estimation, recycling should not turn junk into more inert junk, it should have purpose! Simple projects range from taking an old wood-frame window and turning it into a chalkboard, jewelry display or mosaic substrate. These are simple and easy examples.
Using old ceiling fan blades to build a windmill are a bit more complex, but well within the average household toolkit and abilities of anybody, if they have a little bit of help.
Neoteric is about imagining larger aims too, such as what that old pile of discarded wood-frame windows could become if they were turned into a very avant-garde greenhouse!?! Or art studio, reading room or wine tasting room?!?
[NOTE: The phone number in the above video is incorrect! Also, yes I gawk at the camera a lot waiting for the stupid timer - I know, it makes me look silly.]
Building a backyard greenhouse or solarium (sunroom) is something people often set out to do but soon end up getting frustrated because there are so many things they didn’t think about, such as the oblique angles of a gable or filling in gaps when the windows are mismatched. These unexpected problems can suddenly seem insurmountable.
However, there are design strategies and common rules that I learned over the many years that tackle complex problems with easy fixes and workarounds that will get you on your way to making something that will leave everyone amazed and thanking you for giving those relics from the past a new life.
I am also inviting the input from others who may know a thing or two about upcycling materials. I think this could be fantastic way to combine our knowledge and personal experiences in this endeavor.
We may come up with a community of gardeners who want to build a greenhouse and builders who want to learn gardening! Crazier things have happened.
There are countless ways of converting old decking, woodwork and wood flooring into items such as toys, picture frames, interior window casings and even a child’s treehouse (or maybe one for yourself!)
Let me know if you want to join, it is free. At some point I may, MAY create a paid sub for things such as detailed plans and video on how to make the more elaborate projects, but right now I am merely open to donations. I can offer everyone free woodworking advice and tricks you may not find elsewhere.
Come join the fun and stomp on that join button, leave a comment or send me a chat and lets do this!
Your greenhouses are fabulous. The idea that no tools required to put the pieces together is unique and inspiring. Saving our precious wood-framed windows is huge. I wonder how many other things people can come up with to further their existence? I would love to see other ideas.
I'm not the builder in our family but I thought I'd share another idea with you. We live deep in the Piney Woods area of East Texas and there are a lot of wild animals and raptor birds here. I'm skeptical about letting my cat go outside because he's just the right size to become a tasty meal for some of the "critters" in our surrounding forest. My husband built the cat a screened-in "cat house" that is at least twice the size of the house you featured in this article. It has a few levels and the top level has an enclosed privacy area where the cat can sleep or seek shade.
My cat can enjoy the outdoors, get some exercise and he is safe from becoming another animal's next meal.
